Time

You call for the leader
And the leader, headless
pulls a cart without wheels.

You call for the passers-by.
The passers-by, eyeless
Hail you blindly.

You call for the dog.
The dog, toothless
Laps its own whimpers.

You call for the poets.
The poets, scared
Hide in their own fear.

"What a time," you say
And await with joy
The hour of the Flood.
