9^th Ohrid P.E.N. Conference

The 9^th Ohrid P.E.N. Conference was held from the 14^th till the 17^th of September 2006 in Ohrid, in the Republic of Macedonia. A meeting of the Translation and Linguistic Rights Committee of the International P.E.N. was also held during this Conference. The theme of the Conference was Spiritus loci. Twenty eight representatives of P.E.N. Centers from the entire world took part in this year’s round table on this subject, but also many writers from the Macedonian P.E.N. Centre – the host and organizer of the Conference - participated at the discussion. The International Secretary of the International P.E.N., Ms. Joanne Leedom-Ackerman, was also among the participants.

Before the official opening of the Conference, the participants were greeted on the day of their arrival by the President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia Mr. Ljubisha Geogrievski, who organized a special reception for this occasion. Mr. Georgievski showed his hospitality to all participants at the Conference, emphasizing the importance of this meeting and the importance of mutual collaboration and close relations between literatures and cultures, hereby made possible by the continuous efforts of the Macedonian PEN Centre.

The Conference was officially opened the following day by Mr. Dimitar Bashevski, the President of the Macedonian PEN Centre. After the greeting and the introductory speech of Mr. Bashevski, the participants were greeted by the International Secretary of the International P.E.N. Ms Joanne Leedom-Ackerman, as well. The official opening was followed by the round table discussion on the subject Spiritus loci where many participants presented and elaborated their views, like: Ms. Entela Safeti Kasi from the Albanian PEN Centre; Mr. Stefan Vlahov-Micov from Bulgaria; Mr. M.A.B. Siddiqque form the Bangladesh PEN Centre; Mr. Agim Gjakova from the Kosova PEN Centre; Mr. Zurab Aloian from the Kurdish PEN Centre; Mr. Rafael Newman from the Swiss-German PEN Centre etc. From the Macedonian PEN Centre the following members participated in the discussion: Ms. Jelena Luzina, Mr. Ivan Dzeparovski, Mr. Vlada Uroshevic and Ms. Kata Kulavkova. The discussion was rich and on a very high level.

After the round table discussion, a presentation and promotion of the Macedonian edition of the novel Wedding in Ohrid (De bruiloft der zeven zige uners) by the Dutch writer A.den. Doolard was held.

In the evening the same day, a poetic portrait of the Macedonian poet Mateja Matevski and an international poetry reading were held at the church St. Sofija in Ohrid. The rich programme was opened with a brilliant musical introduction by the choir “Stiv Naumov” from Bitola. Academician Kata Kulavkova and PhD professor Elizabeta Sheleva talked in honour of Mr. Matevski’s poetry in English, French and Macedonian and his poetry was read in several languages by his fellow poets and by Mr. Matevski himself. The participants at conference also had a chance to read their own poetry in their native languages. And as representatives of the diplomatic core in Macedonia, the EU Special Representative and Head of the EC Delegation in the Republic of Macedonia Mr. Erwan Fouйrй and the President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia Mr. Ljubisha Geogrievski were present at this event. On this occasion, two statues of Magna Mater were given as presents on behalf of the Translation and Linguistic Rights Committee to Mr. Mateja Matevski and also to Ms. Jane Spender from International PEN (through Ms. Joanne Leedom-Ackerman) in honour of their achievements.

On the third day, a meeting of the Translation and Linguistic Rights Committee of International P.E.N. was held, where a special emphasis was put on discussing the linguistic rights of minorities worldwide (with reports from many PEN Centres) and a specific declaration was adopted that will be presented at the Assembly of Delegates at the Congress of International PEN in Senegal in May in 2007.

After this meeting, the newest edition of the Macedonian PEN Review - an anthology of the Macedonian short story in French language (edited by the acad. Kata Kulavkova) was promoted.

The participants of the 9^th Ohrid P.E.N. Conference were also introduced with the most important archeological and cultural sights in Ohrid, and after having finished the working part of Conference, they were also taken by boat to the well-known picturesque location of the Church of St. Naum Ohridski.

Деветта охридска ПЕН конференција, 14-17 септември, 2006 г.

Од 14 до 17 септември 2006 година, во Охрид, Република Македонија, се одржа Деветтата охридска ПЕН конференција. Во рамки на Конференцијата, се одржа и состанок на Комитетот за превод и јазични права на Меѓународниот ПЕН. Конференцијата работеше на тема Spiritus loci. Оваа година на Конференцијата зедоа учество 28 претставници на ПЕН центрите од светот, а исто така и македонски писатели, членови на Македонскиот ПЕН центар, кој е организатор и домаќин на овој настан. Меѓу учесниците во Охрид, беше и генералниот секретар на Меѓународниот ПЕН, госпоѓата Џоан Лидом-Акерман.

Пред официјалното отворање на Конференцијата, учесниците ги прими претседателот на Собранието на Република Македонија, г. Љубиша Георгиевски. Г-нот Георгиевски им го укажа своето гостопримство на сите учесници на Конференцијата, истакнувајќи ја важноста на оваа средба, зближувањето и соработката меѓу различните култури и литератури, овозможени и реализирани од страна на Македонскиот ПЕН центар.

Конференцијата ја отвори Димитар Башевски, претседател на Македонскиот ПЕН центар. По поздравот и излагањето на Башевски, присутните учесници на тркалезната маса ги поздрави и генералниот секретар на Меѓународниот ПЕН, госпоѓата Џоан Лидом-Акерман. По свеченото отворање на конференцијата, на темата Spiritus loci зборуваа повеќемина учесници од ПЕН центрите од светот, како и македонски писатели и тоа: Ентела Каси, од Албанскиот ПЕН, гостинот Стефан Влахов-Мицов од Бугарија, М.А.Б. Сидик, од Бангладешкиот ПЕН центар, Агим Ѓакова од Косовскиот, Зураб Алоиан, од Курдскиот, Рафаел Њуман од швајцарско-германскиот и др. А од македонските учесници на темата со свои излагања настапија Јелена Лужина, Иван Џепароски, Влада Урошевиќ и Катица Ќулафкова. Излагањата и дискусијата беа на високо ниво.

По завршувањето на тркалезната маса беше промовирано македонското издание на романот „Свадбата во Охрид” од холандскиот писател Ден Долард.

Во текот на Конференцијата, во црквата Света Софија во Охрид беше претставен творечки портрет на македонскиот поет Матеја Матевски и беше одржано меѓународно литературно читање. По овој повод, за Матеја Матевски, свое излагање имаше академик Ката Ќулавкова, на француски јазик и д-р Елизабета Шелева, на англиски јазик. На оваа богата вечер, која почна со настап на хорот на КУД „Стив Наумов” од Битола, присуствуваше и претседателот на Собранието на Република Македонија, г. Љубиша Георгиевски, како и специјалниот претставник на Европската комисија во Република Македонија, г. Ерван Фуере.

На состанокот на Комитетот за превод и јазични права, посебен акцент беше ставен врз прашањето за правата на јазиците на малцинствата. По завршувањето на овој состанокот, на вториот ден од Конференцијата, беше промовиран и најновиот број на Ревијата на Македонскиот ПЕН центар, кој донесува антологија на македонскиот расказ на француски јазик, приредена од академик Ката Ќулавкова.

Учесниците на Деветтата Охридска ПЕН конференција, во текот на одржувањето на конференцијата ги разгледаа и знаменостите на Охрид, а по завршувањето на сите работни активности, учесниците отидоа со брод на излет до Свети Наум.
